When Will the Mountain Passes Open?

One of the biggest questions around Colorado right now, is when will the high country passes open? Thats really hard to say, we are coming off one of the biggest snow years on record in the San Juan Mountains. I went up to the mountains to have a look myself o May 14th, I wanted to see how much snow was still at some of the favorite back country trails, like Black Bear Pass, Yankee Boy basin, and Corkscrew Gulch.

The first shot is from Yankee Boy Basin! You can see how much snow there is still on the ground up there!!

You can see here, just how deep Black Bear pass is on May 14th!

This is how deep the snow is up on Red Mountain Pass, at this point they did not have the county rod through Red Mountain Mining District open yet.

I am not sure when the trails will open? But it is still going to be a awhile!!

  1. So much for “global warming” right? When you take your “scientific readings” at major airports (like OHare, DFW, PNX, ) think the increase in jet traffic is related? Good old Mother Nature always finds a cyclic balance.
