Corkscrew Gulch is one of my favorite trails in the San Juans, it gains elevation rapidly, and is smoother than most trails in the area.

Climbing up up in Elevation. There are not as many mining ruins as some of the other trails, but scenery easily makes up for it.
we found a nice place for lunch, so the kids could get out and play, they found a nice stream to throw rocks in.
As you reach the final bowl coming from hey 550, you reach the final set of switchbacks, which is the best part of the trail. These shelf roads will make you nervous if you do not like heights.

Sitting up at the top, the views are amazing. On the way down the back, you can head back towards Silverton, or take left and head up and over Hurricane Pass.
